Celebrating 50: Holy Trinity Church prepares to begin new era of service

On Sunday, Oct. 8, people will gather at Holy Trinity Church to celebrate the congregation’s 50 years in Brandenburg and embrace, for the second time, the beginning of a new era of ministry and mission.The anniversary celebration will begin at 10 a.m. (EDT) with Eucharist, celebrated by Bishop Ted Gulick. The reception afterwards will feature a collection of still photos and a video presentation chronicling the life of the congregation, which actually began its ministry in Grahamton early in the 20th century when it was led by Fr. Gorter. In 1941, the U.S. government bought Holy Trinity Memorial Chapel in Grahamton as part of the Fort Knox expansion, but the congregation remained together, worshiping in the home of Joe and Maggie Allen until 1954 when the Rev. Courtney Carpenter broke ground for the new church on land donated by the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation.
New dean of cathedral appointed

The Rev. Mark Allen Bourlakas, rector of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Davidson, N.C., has been appointed dean of Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral, Louisville. Bourlakas, elected by the Cathedral Chapter on Nov. 20, was notified and accepted the appointment the next day. He was one of three finalists considered for the position.According to the letter by Bishop Ted Gulick announcing the appointment, Bourlakas has previously served on a cathedral staff and has corporate church experience. "He is a caring pastor, a careful listener and thinker, and solidly grounded in his faith. The Cathedral has been greatly blessed," Gulick said. A copy of his biography may be found at St. Alban's Web site.Bourlakas is expected to join the cathedral in mid-January.A copy of the bishop's letter follows.
Bowling Green rector retires, other diocesan clergy on the move

This summer has been marked with significant clergy changes. The rector of the Diocese of Kentucky's third largest parish, Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling Green, has retired, and one of the diocese's oldest congregation's, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Henderson, has called a new rector after a year and a half search. Associate rector changes are also taking place--at Christ Church, Bowling Green, and at St. Francis in the Fields Church, Harrods Creek.Read on for more details about the clergy behind these changes.
Stewardship, services to aid church ministries was focus of Fall Leadership Conference

Encouraged by young Episcopalians’ passionate involvement in Millennium Development Goals initiatives to eradicate poverty globally, Bishop Ted Gulick urged leaders of the diocese’s congregations to cultivate an understanding of stewardship as an act of giving out of desire and moral responsibility rather than out of guilt and obligation. Noting that most congregations are now engaged in their annual stewardship campaigns, Gulick explained that it is important for us to see that we are made in God’s image and, like Jesus, are a gift to the world. Stewardship, he said, is best illustrated and explained by Jesus. “What is the one nonliving entity that Jesus gave a name to?” Gulick asked. “Mammon, which is Aramaic for money. You cannot serve God and serve Mammon. Money can take on something like a personality, said rabbi Jesus.”
Camp 2008: a place of high energy, sacred turf

Although the number of campers was down slightly, the energy level was high at All Saints’ this summer, thanks in part to the contributions of volunteers and a new play space, according to camp director Ben Linder.
Diocesan youth director to leave in August

Ben Linder, the director of youth and young adult ministries of the Diocese of Kentucky and a youth minister at St. Matthew’s Church, has announced he will be leaving those positions in August in order to return to Arkansas.
Bishop announces search for his successor to begin

Bishop Ted Gulick announced last night at the Trustees and Council meeting that he has asked the diocese's Standing Committee to begin the search process to find the diocese's next bishop. The announcement was a surprise during a meeting, held at Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown, for which the main agenda item was the diocese's preliminary budget for 2009.
New inn and lodge dedicated, canon honored

The opening of All Saints' new lodge and inn was officially recognized Nov. 3 with a festive dedication and reception that also brought "a bittersweet moment" when Bishop Ted Gulick, the Rev. Libby Wade and diocesan treasurer Don Kohler paid tribute to the diocese's canon, who had been called to serve a parish in Virginia.
